1 * Aquatic first aidAquatic first aid
Time: 8:30 am
I will be running a 16hr Aquatic First Aid Course at Chelsea Kayak Club on 1st and 2nd February 2020. A 16hr First Aid Course is the British Canoeing prerequisite for Level 2 coaches and people who are leading trips. As this course has been designed specifically for paddlers, you’ll be shown how to carry out basic Life Support when someone is in paddling kit. There will also be a 2 hour session on the water, running through a series of incidents.
Venue: Chelsea Kayak Club
Dates: February 1st and 2nd 2020
Times: 08:30 – 17:30 (please arrive at 08:25 for registration and getting a cup of coffee).
Prerequisites: over 16yrs of age
Day 1 (Saturday 1st Feb)
Today’s sessions will focus on
· Life saving procedures: Basic Life Support, defibrillators, choking and recovery position.
· Injuries, focusing on injuries likely in our environment
· Medical Conditions.
· Scenarios on dry land.
The session on injuries will focus on those sustained whilst kayaking. However the Day 1 sessions will provide everyone with the skills required to deal with everyday events, so will be of use at home, at work and whilst out and about.
Please wear clothes suitable for lying and sitting on the ground. I will bring some floor mats to make it more comfortable.
Please bring with you
· a packed lunch
· your first aid kit and rescue kit that you use on trips.
Day 2 (Sunday 2nd February)
Today’s session will have an emphasis on being remote, and decision making during an incident.
· Considerations for expeditions.
· Incident Management.
· Spinal injuries.
· Moving People.
· Hand over to rescue services.
· Scenarios on the water.
· Debrief
The day will start and finish in the classroom but we will spend about a couple of hours on the water, going through some scenarios as if we were out on a sea kayaking trip. This is not a rescue course but as it’s early in the year, and you’ll probably get wet, please choose to wear kit that will keep you warm and dry.
Please bring with you
· Your boat and paddling kit, etc.
· Packed lunch.
Classroom Sessions
These will be a mix of instruction, demonstration, powerpoint presentation, discussions and practical activities. There’s a lot to pack in to each day.
In providing first aid it is usually necessary to touch the patient. For the conscious patient, permission must be sought. Please be prepared for the fact that touching and being touched will form part of the course.
You can take notes if you wish but I will provide handouts on Basic Life Support, Choking and Incident Management, and a First Aid manual will be provided to each person attending.
Lunch:
Please bring a packed lunch with you. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch. There’ll also be 2 shorter breaks of about 15 mins each.
Photos:
I’d like to take some photos during the course to help with promotion. It may be that some could be uploaded onto a website. If you have objections to photos being taken and/or used, please let me know in advance. Thank you.
