Totally Thames Tasters – 7 & 8 Sep

PLA Notices

Devon 27-29 Sep

This will be an excellent opportunity for paddling in the early autumn, exploring the beautiful North Devon coastline, and developing your sea kayaking skills.

“The moorland hills of Exmoor National Park meet the Bristol Channel rudely and abruptly, plunging over 300 meters to sea level. The height is lost through steeply wooded slopes topping the highest cliffs on mainland Britain. This makes for a spectacular coastal trip, with the added challenge of the Bristol Channel’s strong tides.”

Dates: Outward travel will be on Friday, 27th September, followed by two days of paddling on the 28th and 29th, with return travel on Sunday 29th or Monday 30th if you wish to stay longer.

Kayaking: Our coach is Paul Greenway from Go with the Flow- Sea Kayaking North Devon https://www.facebook.com/gowiththeflownorthdevon. He is a highly experienced sea kayaker and a very friendly, chatty person. We also have the opportunity for a second coach, Darren Sherwood, who is a top person in the British Canoeing world of training and development.

The weekend will be tailored to us and will likely involve coastal journeys mixed with skills development and coaching in moderate water conditions. Participants must be at least at Sea Kayak Award level (assessment not required).

Accommodation: Accommodation options depend on the group’s preferences. You can arrange your own accommodation, most likely in Ilfracombe, close to the launching spots. Alternatively, we could camp at Lobb Fields, costing £40 per person for the weekend, near the beautiful surf beach Saunton Sands.

For group accommodation, a more budget-friendly option is available at the Ultimate Adventure Centre, though it is a bit further from the launching spots and a little more basic.

All areas offer various dining options, and the group can choose to self-cater or eat out in the evenings.

Costs: You should expect to spend around £150-£250 for the trip, plus the cost of meals.

  • Transport: Costs will vary depending on your travel arrangements. Carpooling is encouraged to reduce costs.
  • Kayaking: Coaching and guiding cost £400 for the weekend for one coach (ratio 1:6). If there are more than 6 people, a second coach is needed.
  • Accommodation: Costs will vary depending on the chosen option.

If you are interested in joining this trip, please register your interest below by 10 August. Note that your place is not confirmed until advised by the trip organizer. There are a maximum of 12 places available (2 coaches).

Once your place is confirmed, a deposit of approximately £50 will be required to secure it.
