Totally Thames Tasters – 7 & 8 Sep

PLA Notices

Newhaven to Birling Gap, Saturday 5 Oct

Seven Sisters, 2023

Detail of Trip

This is a day paddle from a beach near Newhaven to Birling Gap, passed the iconic Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. The route follows the coastline, and has limited places to stop. Therefore this is a committing paddle and we expect to be in the boat for two hours without stopping on land. The plan is to launch at 10:30am from Newhaven and paddle East to Birling Gap for lunch, before paddling back to the launch point.

This trip is for paddlers who are experienced Thames paddlers (eg three times this year), have had some experience on the sea already and are comfortable in waves. Birling Gap can have strong waves on the beach landing, although we will try to avoid that.

Grade: B, that is Explore Award level or equivalent experience. Guidance on gradings – Trip and Session Guidelines « Chelsea Kayak Club.

Remember the club provides all the kit needed for this trip (eg buoyancy aid, paddle, spray deck and cags), as well as boats.

We plan to launch about 10:30am and be back at the launch site at about 5pm. Estimated distance is 24 km total.

All trips can only go ahead if the conditions of sea and weather permit and this can only be assessed in the few days before the day of the trip. There will be a WhatsApp group set up for those going and an on-line meeting on the Wednesday before the trip. The trip is also dependent upon being able to move and recover the appropriate number of kayaks to the trip start point.
